May 30, 2009

(Gravenhurst, ON) The South Muskoka Shield are happy to announce that Garrett Hamel, former captain of the Shield, will be taking on the duties of assistant General Manager effective immediately.

Garrett has been involved with the organization since it's inception in 2006 and has been a great asset to the team both on and off the ice. Garrett will be helping out General Manager Gord Carey in dealing with the majority of non-hockey issues including marketing, sponsorship, and public/community relations.

"I'm always looking for ways to help and improve the team." said Hamel, "This organization has developped into one of the premier programs as far as the on ice product is concerned. Now, it is my goal to carry that on ice success into the community so we can break out of our bubble and truly be a great asset to the area."

This past year Garrett completed his first year in the Sports Administration program at Laurentian University. He finished the year tops in his class with an 89% average for his first year of studies. This summer he is also working as a research associate for the Institute for Sport Marketing in Sudbury, Ontario.

First on Garrett's agenda is the Golf with the Champs golf tournament. Local resident Devin Morley will be helping organize the event which is scheduled to take place on June 26th.
