Friday
September 19th The
Shield moved to 4 wins and 0 losses on friday night against the
expansion team Ville-Marie Dragons with a very convincing 13-3 victory.
"I
asked the boys to play a more disciplined game and overcome the
penalty problems that we've experienced in the first three games."
commented Coach Irons. "The boys responded with a very disciplined
game against an extremely chippy Ville-Marie. In a number of incidents
Ville-Marie players tried to get our players to engage in fights
or retaliation type penalties; but the boys would not be fooled."
The
Shield now travel to Thornhill to participate in the GMHL College
Showcase Cup where they will play a league game against the Espanola
Kings in front of what is expeted to be numerous NCAA scouts.
Saturday
September 20th
At the
inaugural Showcase weekend in Thornhill the Shield played a league
game against the Espanola Kings. The Shield came out on top by a
score of 9 to 1 as it might be suggested that Espanola could be
in a rebuilding year.
This
game was never really in doubt as the Shield scored early and often.
This puts the Shield's win streak at 5 games, closing in on the
franchise record 7 game win streak from last season.
When
asked about the game coach Irons stated "GM Gord Carey and
myself recruited our players based on speed and skill. With theimplementation
of the NCAA rules this year there is no room for fighters or players
whose games rely on hooking or holding their opponents.". Irons
also stated "I believe our team's speed and skill will challenge
the top teams in the GMHL.".
Next
week the Shield take on last year's Russell Cup championship team
the Bradford Rattlers. This should prove to be the toughest test
to date this year as Bradford is another team with a reputation
for highly skilled and fast hockey. So mark next Friday on your
calendar and be at the Gravenhurst Centennial Center when the puck
drops at 7:30pm. This will be an exciting match up to be sure!
