Shield Finish 7th with Strong Final Weekend
February 17, 2008

Coming into the last weekend of GMHL regular season play the Shield occupied the 7th splot in the GMHL standings, only a single point ahead of the streaking King Wild. It was no secret that the Shield would need a win or two to stay in front of the Wild.

Thursdayt Night they hosted the Espanola Kings at the Gravenhurst Centennial Center and showed that they were ready to end their recent struggles with a hard fought come from behind victory.

The Kings got out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before the Shield responded with one of their own before the end of the period making it 2-1 after the 1st period of play.

In the second the Shield came out much stronger and took the play to the Kings and evened up the score at 2-2 leading into the 3rd period.

The Shield contiuned to dominate the play in the 3rd and took their first lead of the game early into the period. Unfortunately the Kings were able to fight back and tallied their third goal of the game with only 5 minutes remaining in regulation time.

With Overtime solving nothing it came down to a shootout. Shield goaltender Ryan Cote was phenominal, stopping all 6 Kings shooters before the Sheilds 6th shooter, Defenceman Steven Vince squeaked one through the pads the the Kings goaltender giving the Shield a 4-3 win and a much needed 2 points.

On Saturday the boys played host to the league leading Bradford Rattlers and showed that when they bring their 'A' game they are argueably the toughesat team to play in the GMHL.

The Shield jumped out to an early lead in the first before the Rattlers quickly responded with one of their own. However the boys didn't let up and potted another goal before the end of the period making it 2-1 after the 1st period.

The battle continued in the second with the Shield taking their first two goal lead of the game. It was evident that the spirits were high on the Shield bench and the boys were determined to win this one. The Rattlers came back with another goal of their own before the end of the period making the score 3-2 for the Shield after forty minutes.

In the 3rd the Shield tightened up even more defensively, keeping the Rattlers to the outside and doing a fantastic job of clearing pucks from scoring areas. Shield forward Travis Saltz burried a backhander past the Rattlers goaltender off of a smooth pass from captain Chris Vandertas to give the Shield their 2nd two goal lead of the game. From then on in it was the pure effort of the Shield players that allowed them to beat the Ratters to pucks and win battles for the rest of the game, Forward Chad Meagher netted an empty net goal to make the final score 5-2.

The loss was only Bradford's 4th loss in regulation all season making the victory even that much more impressive. The Shield are the only team this season to take more than 2 points away from the Rattlers as they took them to a shootout on January 13th earlier this year in a 7-6 loss.

On Sunday the team was supposed travel to Tweed, Ontario to face the Tamworth Cyclones in their last scheduled game of the season; however, the game was cancelled due to freezing rain conditions. This resulted in a forfeit for the Shield and a 1-0 loss. Luckily for the Shield the game was meaningless as they had already secured 7th place ahead of the King Wild with their big win over Bradford the night before.
